Since I've gotten myself back to the United States, I've been keeping myself busy by getting reacquainted with the country (everyone is speaking English here! It's so weird!), setting up my new 1TB media server and getting it to interface with my PlayStation 3, and getting myself reacquainted with the PS3 as well. While doing so, I was looking through a few of the E3 videos Sony popped up on the PlayStation Network, where they announced a new game coming out. Its also a game with the least creative title ever. MAG, or Massive Action Game. I mean, honestly? What kind of a name is that? But, I digress, as that's hardly why I'm mentioning it.
What is actually interesting about this game is that it will offer 256 people to play together at one time. The gameplay seems centered on players joining up together in squads of 8 people to fight against other players (presumably groups of squads vs. other groups of squads). These are numbers that well surpass any other FPS console game on the market and only a handful of PC FPS games have such numbers. While I'm not that much of a FPS fan, news like this is still interesting all the same.

The day before my trip to Japan. Well, 'trip' is probably a bit of an understatement, what with me traveling there to live and study for 11 months. This will act as a journal for this trip, which will be posted to my website as well as resting in a continuing document on my hard drive, so that I can reflect on this trip in the future. While EmergentFuture.com is primarily a site about game development, it is also a site about my life, and of course, a portfolio. This is certainly relevant to both my life and my career. Not only that, but as the site focuses heavily on social interaction through online games and community management, I feel a look into a culture beyond the normal Western one will be of particular interest. Worry not, though, as the site will maintain its original purpose as well, even though I will be chronicling this trip along with my insights into those fields of the game industry.

Another column is up on the WarCry Network from me. This one was a bit... easy, I think. But, I felt compelled and it really is a jumping point I can use for a few other columns. Tomorrow I'm going to pound out the next one, which will hopefully be up next week - I am trying to work on a weekly basis with these things now. I am looking forward to this one as it should start a more controversial chain of columns - which is fun!

I know, it's frighting. Where did the menu go? Why is it called a 'blogroll'? Why is Raph Koster's name where 'resume' was?! (I swear, nothing subliminal is going on there). Well, I'm sure there's much less panicking going on than that, and a quick glance up and you'll notice I am actually making some use of the top menu now. What was formerly the main menu is now the Blogroll, so you can get an idea of some of the feeds that I live by. Well, save Slashdot, Gamasutra, Wired, and a few others - but, they don't count. Oh, if you're wondering why 'home' is on that list, the reason is quite simple. If I remove that link, the front page of the site vanishes along with it. Its a quirk of Joomla, since that is technically still the 'main menu'. The right tool for the right job... and Joomla isn't really built for blogging entirely in mind. I'm sure I'll find an easy enough work around for that however. Now, why the change? This site has had some issues, which need to be corrected, and this is one step in that direction. What is this site? Is it a personal site? Portfolio? Blog? Really, its essentially all of those. However, it needs a focus, and I would like to focus it more toward the blog. This is secretly handy as it enhances the portfolio aspect in a way too, since I'm hunting for community positions in the game industry... but that's beside the point. Focus is going to be a big theme. That is the one thing that this site has not had and I will be the first to admit it. Why has this been the case? Two reasons, largely: - I am in Japan. There's a lot to talk about here, and there's also a lot going on preventing me from doing much talking here.
- I work for WarCry. This might be a bit surprising, and you might not link my position over there with my site here... but, the simple fact is, I write a column for them about community. That is what I was intending on doing with this site, which was set up before the column began.
The first point is a pain, but that can be worked around. The second? That is a bit harder. However, I have a nice idea on how to handle this. Not all of my anecdotes on community, MMOs, news, and what not, are really good for a column, but they would work on a blog. I also can stream more raw information in here, where the column can remain a slower paced, but more refined place to get my views. I am going to attempt to work around that issue and hopefully get this site going along the right track. I have no intention of letting this site's amazingly great name go to waste. ;-)
