I admit, a name like 'Emergent Future' doesn't necessarily burst with obvious meaning. However, this site does actually serve a very particular purpose (well, more than one really). This site is focused on areas of technology that revolve around the word 'emergent' - not just as in, new technologies, but rather a different use of the word. Emergent Gameplay, for example, refers to an activity within a virtual environment where players create a game using the rules of the world, but using them in a way that the developer did not intend. Thus, emergent in this case means that I am looking out for new ways of using technology, new ways to view the world through technology, and new break throughs that allow people to interact with each other in ways never before dreamed. More specifically, I'll be focusing on areas such as web development, electronics, online games, and community management.

If you're interested in new technology, game development, web development, online communities, and new and different ways of communication, this might be an interesting stop on the web for you. At the same time, a lot of this site has actually evolved as I have personally. In the past, a lot of posts have been about game development, but as time has gone on, I've been finding new perspectives in game development can be easily tied into other areas of technology and human interaction. In much the same way, I've been finding that is true about web development as well. So, while I am largley focusing on these areas, I do expect this site to grow organically as well.

Now, why make a site like this? To be honest, it was completely on a whim. I already had a site or two sitting around in the dark depths of the World Wide Web, but one day I decided that I wanted to play with a content management package called Joomla! (which this site is currently running). However, once it was set up, I needed something to do with it... and I had just gotten myself back from the 2007 Game Developers Conference. Well, that particular week in San Fransico was a pretty powerful and motivational one for me. As a result, I decided to start to focus this site around some of the biggest issues I saw rising up in game development at the time, and some of the issues I enjoy ranting about the most as is anyway. That week also made me think more about web development, online communities, communicaiton in general, and other forms of technology. As my interests in these various fields grew, so too has this site evolved.

As another use, I'm currently using this site to house some of the work that I've done. That is, I have pages dedicated to my writing and media work. Effectively, when combined with my resume which is also found here, this site is my digital porftolio. It seems fitting as such.
